2010 Cervelo line-up released

Cervelo has just released their full 2010 model lineup. Remarkably, most of the bikes feature dramatically different designs than their 2009 predecessors. Even the venerable S1 looks like it has undergone an update. More details on these models will come once Interbike rolls around. Click on "read more" for pictures of the full range.

Pedal-based power meter to launch at Interbike

Bay Area-based MetriGear has confirmed that they will be releasing a pedal-based power meter at Interbike in two weeks. In a press email, MetriGear describes the system as a "patent pending force-sensing technology that is integrated into the hollow spindle of stock bicycle pedals, and measures power by directly measuring the force being applied to the pedals." We'll keep you updated with details as Interbike approaches.

Garmin TT Computer Mount- Part 2

Garmin/Slipstream has a knack for finding cool solutions to common problems. At this year's Tour of California, team mechanics were using a time trial aero bar mount crafted from a matrix of half-dozen zip ties. Cyclingnews spotted a new revision of the aero bar mount at the Giro d'Italia's opening team time trial. Mechanics used the backbone of a carbon bottle cage to reinforce the mount, thereby reducing vibrations that made the computer itself hard to look at (we tried it ourselves). It's always neat to see what pro-level mechanics can come up with in a last-minute scenario.

Review: BOB Yak Trailer

Of all the bike accessories we’ve used and reviewed, none of them have transformed our view of cycling quite like the BOB Yak. Unlike fancy carbon components or ultra-efficient upgrades, the Yak doesn’t promise to make you a faster rider. What it does, however, is open you up to the worlds of cyclo-tourism and car-free living. I first attached the Yak to my commuter road bike two months ago to take it for a quick test ride. Little did I know how addicting it would be- I haven’t removed it since.

Review: Easton EC90 Crank

When Easton set out to design their EC90 crank, they gathered all the top-performing carbon fiber and aluminum cranks on the market to see what kind of competition they were up to. Easton’s goal was to take their time in designing this crank, so that the end result would be as stiff as the best aluminum cranks while offering a significant weight savings. Prior to the EC90, a crank purchase had always involved a compromise between weight and stiffness. Easton used the experience they had gained making carbon forks, handlebars, and wheels to create what they hoped would be the ultimate carbon crank.

Review: Enduro Ceramic Bearings

Enduro sent us a set of their ceramic bearing upgrade kit, and we’ve been using them for the past few months. Here’s what we’ve found.

Ease of installation largely depends on the type of hub you have. Installing our bearings into DT Swiss 240s road hubs meant removing the cassette freehub body and hub caps, and removing the old bearings by lightly tapping them out. Pressing in ceramic bearings is easy with the right tools, but is highly risky if you’re used to installing bearings the way your grandfather taught you- by tapping them in around the edges. Ceramic bearings, especially those with ceramic races, are more prone to shattering than steel bearings, so be sure to take your time with the installation.

SRAM "XX" MTB Group Revealed

Looks like the rumors were correct- SRAM seems to have developed a high-end, double-crankset mountain bike group called "XX", presumably in reference to the 2x10 gear configuration. There's a few interesting aspects to consider, the biggest of which being that this is the first ten-speed mountain bike groupset. While that may or may not mean compatability with existing ten-speed road groups and casettes, the addition of an extra gear will be welcomed by all types of mountain bike riders. That said, the double crankset clearly indicates that the group is targeted at gram-conscious racers and professionals.

Cyclingnews has an in-depth analysis of the components- head over there and check it out.

Review: Schwalbe Ultremo R

For the past five months, we’ve been using Schwalbe’s Ultremo R clincher tire in a variety of conditions. Schwalbe markets the Ultremo R as a racing tire, and its performance and light weight certainly back up that claim. Unfortunately, its durability is also characteristic of a racing tire- that is, it’s relatively mediocre. Overall though, the Ultremo R is the ideal racing tire, providing the best grip through tough criterium corners and faster speed on time trials and road races.

Slipstream's DIY TT GPS Mount

Image- CyclingNews.com

Of all the innovative bike tech at this year's Tour of California prologue, team Garmin-Slipstream's bikes were some of the most impressive. Their mechanics also seem to have found an interesting solution to a common problem- mounting a bike computer on time trial bars. Using a bar extender is a good solution, but it can interfere with arm positioning and offers limited fore-aft adjustment. The Garmin mechanics used zip ties to fashion what appears to be a highly functional mount. I was able to recreate it in a few minutes- it's rock solid!

Mavic finally recalls R-sys wheels

After dozens of stories and pictures of R-SYS wheels failing catastrophically, Mavic has decided to recall the R-Sys front wheel. The problem seems to lie in the design of the carbon tubular spokes, according to the recall:

"Mavic has identified that the carbon tubular spokes of the R-SYS front wheel may break during use in certain circumstances and causing the rider to lose control and possibly fall, potentially sustaining injury."

Mavic is offering to exchange your faulty R-SYS wheel for a "new upgraded" one. The catch is that this exchange will only start on March 31, 2009. Until then, Mavic will provide you with an Aksium front wheel, which you may keep after recieving your replacement R-SYS.

Find out more about the recall here.
